The girl in the blue dress. 2022. Oil on board

The mystery of the lost painting! My client once saw a painting years ago of his great-great-grandmother, Jemima. The portrait depicted Jemima as a young woman in her 20's seated in a blue gown, however, the painting mysteriously disappeared in the late 90's. After years of determined searching, my client asked me to re-create the missing painting.
Together we gathered photographs of Jemima as an old lady which were taken in the early 1900's, and turned back the clock to represent her as a young woman in the costume true to her era circa 1860.

I had to research fashion, portrait trends and staging, hairstyles and jewelry as well as furniture. The addition of the Bible on the table was an acknowledgement of Jemima devout Christian faith. My client was thrilled to receive the reimagined missing painting of Jemima in the blue dress,

Bella. 2016. Graphite on paper
I was asked to draw a family ancestor who was transported as a convict to Australia in 1847. There were no photos of this woman, only a convict record stating the following descriptions of her face.
"Age 36, 5ft4in, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, round face, wide mouth, large scar left side of small nose".
At some point Bella was a domestic servant/ housekeeper, which meant I had to research various aprons and uniforms of the time.

Still Waters.
2020. Oil on canvas
1m x 1.5m
This painting was a gift commissioned from a wife to her husband. The elements of this painting come from his love of Iceland, New Zealand and the symbolic and spiritual significance of deer. I tried to capture abundance and flourishing that happens internally when we take time to be still and listen.
